Did you know that January is commonly referred to as Divorce Month? There’s something about hanging on for one more holiday season and then being faced with the same old disappointments that allows women to gather their wits about them in the new year and face what they have been putting off, often for years. Talk about a fresh start. Talk about a New Year’s resolution. I will no longer be hampered by this relationship.

I too decided to get divorced in January. Paying subscribers can read my Divorce Diary here. We ultimately filed on February 6, 2023.

(I share some of this story in the post below).

So, in honor of Divorce Month, I’ve compiled a list of divorce resources alongside therapist and author Oona Metz, whose new book Unhitched: The Essential Divorce Guide for Women, goes on sale January 13. You can learn more about Oona here. I discovered her on Reshma Saujani’s My So-Called Midlife podcast (you can listen to that interview here) and they’ve just released a new episode today (listen here). Oona is a fan and supporter of The Mother Lode and so we decided to partner on this list. She includes a resource section in the back of her book, some of which we’ve included below. But as we all know, media is dynamic and new offerings are popping up all the time. Her book also includes resources we don’t below, including the best children’s books on divorce, coparenting books, and more.

Just like everything in our society, capitalism has invaded thus there is an entire industry of divorce support aside from divorce lawyers (who I wouldn’t necessarily call “support”). Divorce coaches charge for their time but are much less expensive than a lawyer (and often less expensive than a therapist). Many coaches have programs and bundles that can be quite expensive even as they probably provide valuable insights that can save you money in the long run. I understand why they offer these programs. I am sure they find themselves spouting the same information in every coaching call. So why not put all that wisdom, that for the most part is pretty cookie cutter, into a program? Then you can learn the basics and use your individual sessions with them for questions specific to your divorce.

But at a time when you are already spending a lot of money on legal fees, it can feel frustrating to have to expend even more resources. There is a wealth of free information on the internet, and we try and point you to those websites, and even an extensive list of social media accounts to follow whose content is top-notch and free.

Please note this is NOT a sponsored post. This list includes resources that both Oona and I have come across through a) her work in this space and b) my experience going through a divorce and doing so. much. research. This is not an exhaustive list, but it is a great start. It includes general websites, divorce support groups, resources for finding a divorce professional, financial resources, divorce coaches, divorce memoirs, divorce podcasts, resources for divorcing a narcissist, social media accounts to follow, and finally, Substacks covering divorce.

This is a valuable post with curated resources; thus, this is for paying subscribers of The Mother Lode. You can sign up for one month for $7 to gain access.
